Wandin is a suburb located in the Yarra Ranges Shire Council in Victoria, Australia. It is situated approximately 40 kilometres east of Melbourne. The suburb is part of the Yarra Valley region, known for its picturesque landscape and abundance of wineries.

Indigenous History

Wandin and its surrounding areas were traditionally inhabited by the Wurundjeri people, who are part of the Kulin nation. They have lived in the region for at least 40,000 years before European settlement. The Wurundjeri people had a deep connection to the land, which was integral to their spiritual beliefs and culture.

European Settlement

The first European settlers arrived in the area in the 1850s. The suburb was named after Wandin Yallock Creek, which flows through the area. The name 'Wandin' is believed to have originated from the Aboriginal word 'wandin-yallock', meaning 'many hills or mountains'.

During the late 19th century, Wandin became an important centre for fruit growing and agriculture. Many orchards were established in the area, with apples, pears, strawberries and other fruits being grown extensively. The local produce was transported to Melbourne and other major cities in Victoria via the nearby railway line.

Wandin Society

The Wandin Society was established in 1982 to preserve and promote the local history of the suburb. The society has a museum located on the Warburton Highway, which is open on the first and third Sunday of every month. The museum contains a range of historical artefacts and memorabilia related to the history of Wandin and its surrounding areas.
